Podcast: Easter Sunday, Year A

Happy Easter! and welcome to the Modern Psalmist Podcast. I’m Rebecca De La Torre.

He is risen! And this is what our entire faith is based upon:

Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.

No other religion religion ever conceived of this miracle, much less experienced it.

Entrance Antiphon

I have risen, and I am with you still, alleluia.
You have laid your hand upon me, alleluia.
Too wonderful for me, this knowledge, alleluia, alleluia.
(Psalm 139:18, 5-6)

Psalm 118
“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.”

Gospel Acclamation

Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed;
let us then feast with joy in the Lord.
(1 Corinthians 5:7b-8a)

Communion Antiphon

Christ our Passover has been sacrificed, alleluia;
therefore let us keep the feast with the unleavened bread
of purity and truth, alleluia, alleluia.

We have traveled with Jesus from Palm Sunday through Holy Week, the last supper and his passion and crucifixion, we can finally rejoice is his resurrection and the promise of our *own* resurrection with Christ on the last day.

I composed our entrance antiphon in mode VIII, which has been referred to as the “perfect” mode in Gregorian chant. There are two options for the entrance antiphon, and I chose to compose the first, taken from Psalm chapter 139, veres 18, 5, and 6:

“I have risen, and I am with you still, alleluia.
You have laid your hand upon me, alleluia.
Too wonderful for me, this knowledge, alleluia, alleluia.”

Entrance Antiphon – Easter Sunday (Mode VIII, De La Torre)

Our psalm today is full of rejoicing in Jesus victory. From Psalm chapter 118, the response is:

“This is the day the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad.”

Psalm 118: This Is the Day

Easter Sunday has a beautiful poem called the Sequence, for which I have composed music as part of my Mass of All Souls. It is intended to blend right into the gospel acclamation, taken from 1 Corinthians chapter 5, verses 7 and 8:

“Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed;
let us then feast with joy in the Lord.”

Easter Sequence (Mass of All Souls)

Alleluia (Mass of All Souls) – Easter, Year A

Our communion antiphon is also taken from 1 Corinthians chapter 5, verses 7 and 8:

“Christ our Passover has been sacrificed, alleluia;
therefore let us keep the feast with the unleavened bread
of purity and truth, alleluia, alleluia.”

Communion Antiphon – Easter Sunday & Vigil (1 Corinthians 5:7-8)

One of the most iconic resurrection songs since Vatican II is Resucitó by Kiko Argüello. Resucitó means “he resurrected” – I hope you enjoy my version here.

Resucitó (English verses)

That was Resucitó by Kiko Argüello for this most blessed Easter Sunday of the Resurrection. Links to individual recordings and sheet music can be found below.

I’ve decided to continue this podcast season through the end of Easter on Pentecost Sunday. So join me next week for Divine Mercy Sunday where I’ll be sharing my Divine Mercy chaplet.

God bless you and Happy Easter!
