Hi and welcome to the Modern Psalmist Podcast. I’m Rebecca De La Torre.

Today we celebrate the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C.

Most of the readings for today encourage us to ask the Lord for the things we need and want, for the Lord is good and compassionate and knows how to give good gifts to those who fear him.

The first reading, taken from Genesis chapter 18, recounts the story of Abraham pleading with the Lord to spare Sodom and Gomorrah if only 10 innocent people can be found there. In the Gospel from Luke chapter 11, Jesus tells the parable of the inopportune neighbor, encouraging us to be persistent in our petitions. Jesus goes on to teach us, in verses 9 & 10:

“Ask and you will receive;
seek and you will find;
knock and the door will be opened to you.
For everyone who asks, receives;
and the one who seeks, finds;
and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened.”

The Psalm for today also reminds us to call on the Lord for our needs because he will be faithful in answering our prayers. Taken from Psalm chapter 138, the response is:

“Lord, on the day I called for help, you answered me.”

The verses go on to continue to praise God and thank him for always providing for our needs when we ask it of him. My personal favorite verse from this psalm is

“Your right hand saves me.
The LORD will complete what he has done for me.”

Psalm 138: You Answered Me [17th OT C]

That was my musical interpretation of Psalm 138: You Answered Me, for the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time, Year C.

The Communion Antiphon for today is from Psalm chapter 103, verse 2:

“Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and never forget all his benefits.”

As the last scripture in the liturgy today, I believe it sums up what should be our prayer of gratitude and thanksgiving for the many blessings the Lord has bestowed on us.
