The gates of heaven were opened for blessed Stephen,
who was found to be first among the number of the Martyrs
and therefore is crowned triumphant in heaven.

First Reading

Acts 6:8-10; 7:54-59

Stephen, filled with grace and power,
   was working great wonders and signs among the people.
Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen,
   Cyrenians, and Alexandrians,
   and people from Cilicia and Asia,
   came forward and debated with Stephen,
   but they could not withstand the wisdom and the spirit with which he spoke.

When they heard this, they were infuriated,
   and they ground their teeth at him.
But he, filled with the Holy Spirit,
   looked up intently to heaven
   and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God,
   and he said,
   “Behold, I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man
   standing at the right hand of God.”
But they cried out in a loud voice, covered their ears,
   and rushed upon him together.
They threw him out of the city, and began to stone him.
The witnesses laid down their cloaks
   at the feet of a young man named Saul.
As they were stoning Stephen, he called out
   “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

Primera Lectura

Hechos de los Apóstoles 6, 8-10; 7, 54-59

En aquellos días, Esteban, lleno de gracia y de poder, realizaba grandes prodigios y señales entre la gente. Algunos judíos de la sinagoga llamada “de los Libertos”, procedentes de Cirene, Alejandría, Cilicia y Asia, se pusieron a discutir con Esteban; pero no podían refutar la sabiduría inspirada con que hablaba. Al oír estas cosas, los miembros del sanedrín se enfurecieron y rechinaban los dientes de rabia contra él.

Pero Esteban, lleno del Espíritu Santo, miró al cielo, vio la gloria de Dios y a Jesús, que estaba de pie a la derecha de Dios, y dijo: “Estoy viendo los cielos abiertos y al Hijo del hombre de pie a la derecha de Dios”.

Entonces los miembros del sanedrín gritaron con fuerza, se taparon los oídos y todos a una se precipitaron sobre él. Lo sacaron fuera de la ciudad y empezaron a apedrearlo. Los falsos testigos depositaron sus mantos
a los pies de un joven, llamado Saulo.

Mientras lo apedreaban, Esteban repetía esta oración: “Señor Jesús, recibe mi espíritu”. Después se puso de rodillas y dijo con fuerte voz: “Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado”. Diciendo esto, se durmió en el Señor.

Jesus said to his disciples:
Beware of men, for they will hand you over to courts
   and scourge you in their synagogues,
   and you will be led before governors and kings for my sake
   as a witness before them and the pagans.
When they hand you over,
   do not worry about how you are to speak
   or what you are to say.
You will be given at that moment what you are to say.
For it will not be you who speak
   but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you.
Brother will hand over brother to death,
   and the father his child;
   children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.
You will be hated by all because of my name,
   but whoever endures to the end will be saved.

En aquel tiempo, Jesús dijo a sus apóstoles: “Cuídense de la gente, porque los llevarán a los tribunales, los azotarán en las sinagogas, los llevarán ante gobernadores y reyes por mi causa; así darán testimonio de mí ante ellos y ante los paganos. Pero, cuando los enjuicien, no se preocupen por lo que van a decir o por la forma de decirlo, porque, en ese momento se les inspirará lo que han de decir. Pues no serán ustedes los que hablen, sino el Espíritu de su Padre el que hablará por ustedes.
